Apartments for Rent in France Long Term | 3–12 Months

This selection of apartments for rent in France long term includes furnished properties in Northern France, Provence, the Côte d'Azur, Languedoc and South-West France. Whether you are retiring to France, working remotely or looking for accommodation while house hunting, our apartments provide a practical base for stays of 3–12 months.

Many of our clients prefer renting an apartment rather than a house, particularly when staying in France for several months. Apartments often provide single-level living, are generally cheaper to rent and tend to be closer to shops, restaurants, markets and everyday facilities. They also require less maintenance, making them a convenient choice for couples, retirees and people exploring France before deciding where to settle.

Finding an apartment to rent long term in France can be difficult for international clients. French landlords and their rental insurance providers often require evidence of French income, tax returns and employment history. These requirements can make it difficult for people moving from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and other countries to secure accommodation before arriving.

At Long Term Rentals in France, we specialise in helping international clients find furnished apartments and houses for extended stays. We provide bilingual rental contracts that can be used as supporting accommodation evidence for French long-stay visa applications, subject to the requirements of the relevant consulate. Our reservation process is straightforward, and we can help you identify properties that suit your preferred location, budget and length of stay.

Below, we highlight some of the best places to rent an apartment in France, together with a selection of properties available for extended rentals. Monthly rental prices generally exclude utilities unless otherwise stated. Please contact us to confirm the latest availability.

North France apartments for rent

Caen Northern France
Caen, Northern France

Northern France is a practical choice for people who want to spend several months in France without being too far from the UK, Belgium or Paris. The region offers historic towns, attractive countryside, good transport connections and generally more affordable accommodation than the capital or the Mediterranean coast. It is also well connected by motorways and rail services, making it a practical base for exploring France and neighbouring European countries.

Paris is undoubtedly the region's biggest attraction. With its world-famous museums, galleries, restaurants, shopping and historic monuments, the French capital is a wonderful place to visit throughout the year. Paris Charles de Gaulle airport is also one of Europe's major international airports, providing excellent connections to the UK, North America, Australia and destinations around the world. For people planning regular international travel, living within reach of Paris can be a significant advantage. Attractive towns such as Chantilly, Senlis and Compiègne, to the north of Paris, are also worth considering for their historic centres, green spaces and access to the capital.

Further north, Amiens is a lively university city, famous for its magnificent Gothic cathedral and attractive canals. Lille combines beautiful Flemish architecture with excellent shopping, restaurants and high-speed rail connections to Paris, Brussels and London.

To the west, Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, has a wonderful medieval centre, while coastal towns such as Dieppe, Le Touquet, Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme provide easy access to beaches and some of Northern France's most beautiful coastal scenery.

Our featured apartment is located in Abbeville, an attractive market town in the Somme department, close to the beautiful Baie de Somme. Abbeville has a good selection of shops, restaurants, supermarkets and everyday facilities, together with rail connections to Amiens and Paris. It is an excellent base for exploring the Picardy coast, the Somme countryside and the historic towns of Northern France, particularly for clients who want a spacious apartment at a more affordable rental price.

Provence apartments for rent long term

Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence, South France

Provence is one of the most beautiful regions of France, famous for its picturesque villages, colourful markets, vineyards and wonderful Mediterranean climate. For people considering long term apartment rentals in Provence, the smaller towns and villages often provide better value than fashionable destinations such as Aix-en-Provence (where apartment prices can be eye-watering), Saint-Rémy or the Luberon.

Our featured properties are located in two particularly attractive parts of Provence. Puyloubier is a charming village at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire, the mountain famously painted by Paul Cézanne. The village is surrounded by vineyards and spectacular countryside, yet the lively city of Aix-en-Provence is within easy reach. Aix is one of the best places to live in Southern France, with excellent restaurants, shopping, markets and cultural activities.

Further north, Villes-sur-Auzon sits close to Mont Ventoux, surrounded by vineyards and the beautiful countryside of the Vaucluse. The village has local shops, cafés and restaurants, while the nearby towns of Carpentras and Avignon provide a wider range of services. This is a particularly appealing area for walking, cycling and exploring the famous hilltop villages of Provence.

Both locations offer the opportunity to experience traditional Provençal village life without paying the premium associated with the region's most expensive towns.

Cote d'Azur apartments for long term rent

Menton French Riviera
Castellar & Menton on the French Riviera

The Côte d'Azur is one of the most popular destinations in France for people looking to spend several months by the Mediterranean. With its mild winters, beautiful coastline, international airport and excellent transport connections, the French Riviera is particularly attractive for winter rentals and extended stays. Although property prices can be high, renting an apartment outside the summer season can provide a more affordable way to enjoy this wonderful part of France.

Nice is one of the best places to live on the Côte d'Azur, especially if you prefer to have shops, restaurants, markets and public transport close at hand. The city has a lively atmosphere throughout the year, excellent healthcare facilities and direct transport connections to other Riviera towns. Further east, the beautiful village of Castellar sits in the hills above Menton, close to the Italian border. This is a quieter alternative to the busy coastal resorts, with spectacular mountain scenery and easy access to the Mediterranean.

Other popular places to live on the Côte d'Azur include Cannes, famous for its film festival, sandy beaches, luxury shopping and lively restaurants, and Antibes, with its beautiful old town, marina, beaches and excellent local markets. Further inland, Grasse, the perfume capital of France, offers a more traditional Provençal atmosphere, attractive countryside and generally more affordable rental accommodation than the fashionable coastal resorts.

Our third featured location is Cap Estérel, near Agay and Saint-Raphaël. This stretch of coastline is particularly beautiful, with red volcanic cliffs, sheltered beaches and the dramatic scenery of the Estérel mountains. It is an excellent location for walking, cycling and enjoying the coast outside the busy summer season.

These three locations offer very different experiences of the French Riviera, from city living in Nice to peaceful village life above Menton and a Mediterranean coastal retreat near Agay.

South France apartments for rent long term - Languedoc & Pyrenees

Roquebrun Languedoc
Roquebrun, the Languedoc

Languedoc is one of the best regions of Southern France for people looking for affordable long term rentals. The region has a wonderful Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches, historic towns, vineyards and excellent food and wine. Compared with Provence and the Côte d'Azur, accommodation is often more reasonably priced, making it particularly attractive for people retiring to France, working remotely or looking for somewhere to live while house hunting.

There are 8 towns and villages in Languedoc and the surrounding region that I particularly recommend to people considering a move to Southern France. Uzès and Sommières are beautiful historic market towns, with lively weekly markets, excellent restaurants and attractive old centres. Pézenas is my local town and it is famous for its antique shops, beautiful architecture and it's Saturday morning market. Marseillan offers a wonderful coastal location beside the Étang de Thau lake, close to the Mediterranean beaches. Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of the 150 most beautiful medieval villages in France, set amongst spectacular limestone scenery. Further south, Collioure is a colourful Mediterranean fishing town at the foot of the Pyrenees, favoured by artists such as Matisse, Derain and Salvador Dalí. Lagrasse, in the Aude department, is a delightful village with a medieval abbey, cobbled streets and a strong artistic community. Finally, Mirepoix, just across the border in the Ariège department, has one of the prettiest medieval market squares in Southern France, surrounded by colourful timber-framed houses.

Béziers is a lively historic town with an excellent range of shops, restaurants, markets and transport connections. The Mediterranean beaches are a short drive away, while the surrounding countryside is filled with vineyards and attractive villages. Further west, Carcassonne is famous for its spectacular medieval citadel, but it is also a practical town in which to live, with supermarkets, healthcare facilities, restaurants and an airport.

The village of Félines-Minervois, in the Aude department, offers a completely different experience. Surrounded by vineyards and beautiful countryside, it is an ideal base for people who prefer a quieter rural lifestyle. The nearby towns of Olonzac and Narbonne provide additional shopping and services.

Further south, Quillan lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees, surrounded by mountains, forests and spectacular scenery. This is a particularly attractive area for walking, cycling and outdoor activities, with a strong sense of local community and more affordable accommodation than many Mediterranean coastal towns.

Whether you prefer a lively town, a traditional wine-making village or the mountains of the Pyrenees, Languedoc offers an excellent range of options for spending several months in France.

South-West France - Dordogne, Charente, the Limousin & Midi-Pyrenees

Roque-Gageac Dordogne
Roque-Gageac Dordogne

South-West France has long been popular with international clients looking to relocate, retire or spend several months enjoying the French countryside. The region is known for its beautiful stone villages, historic market towns, rolling countryside and excellent local food. Rental prices in rural South-West France are often considerably lower than in major cities such as Bordeaux and La Rochelle, although a car is usually essential if you choose to live in a rural location.

In the Dordogne, our featured apartment is located in Fanlac, a beautiful stone village close to Montignac and the famous Lascaux caves. The surrounding area is filled with attractive villages, markets and historic sites, while Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the most beautiful towns in South-West France. This is an excellent location for people who want to explore the Dordogne Valley and experience traditional rural French life.

Further north, Bourganeuf and Le Dorat offer a very different experience of France. Bourganeuf is a small historic town in the Creuse department, around an hour from Limoges, surrounded by peaceful countryside, lakes and forests. Le Dorat is an attractive medieval town in the Haute-Vienne department, with an impressive Romanesque collegiate church, local shops and a railway station. Both locations appeal to people looking for a quieter lifestyle and relatively affordable accommodation.

In Charente-Maritime, our featured property is located near Saint-Jean-d'Angély, an attractive market town with a beautiful historic centre, cafés, restaurants and everyday services. The surrounding countryside is dotted with villages, while La Rochelle, the Atlantic coast and the historic city of Saintes are within reach.

Further south, Lectoure, in the Gers department, is one of the most attractive hilltop towns in Gascony. It has a beautiful historic centre, lively markets, excellent local produce and wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. The Gers is particularly appealing to people who enjoy traditional French village life, good food and a slower pace of life.

These locations are especially suitable for people considering a permanent move to rural France. Renting for several months provides an excellent opportunity to explore the surrounding area, experience daily life and decide whether a particular town or village is right for you.
