We are regularly asked to find long term rentals in France that accept dogs and cats. Many owners are happy to consider pets, but they understandably want to know how many animals you have, their breed and size, and whether the property is suitable for them.
Some owners will accept more than one dog, while others may have restrictions because of the property's size, garden or neighbouring houses. It is always best to discuss your pets before reserving the accommodation.
Our experience is that the monthly rent is only one consideration. An enclosed garden is obviously the ideal, but failing that, somewhere for your dog to exercise and easy access to local walks can make a considerable difference during a longer stay in France.
What to look for in a pet-friendly rental in France
If you are bringing a dog, check whether the garden is fully enclosed rather than simply described as private. That said, you should also be prepared to make the garden suitable for your pets, so they cannot escape the garden. Most Owner's we deal with are not going to go to the expense of putting up 500m of fencing, where none currently exist. But they are prepared to work with clients if there is a workable alternative. Also, look at nearby roads, access to countryside walks and whether there are restrictions on leaving pets unattended. For cats, consider road safety and whether the accommodation is suitable for keeping them indoors while they settle into unfamiliar surroundings.
It is also worth checking any additional cleaning arrangements with the owner before booking. Pets should always be declared in advance so that the agreed arrangements can be confirmed in writing.
I would say that France as a country is generally pet-friendly. You often see customers in restaurants and cafes with dogs and outside of the high season, all the beaches allow you to walk your dog (on and off the lead). Also in the centre of the small villages, you will always find a cat strolling down the narrow lanes or lying asleep on top of a wall. There is also a good connection of local Vets, with most towns having 2-3 vet practices.
Bringing your dog or cat to France

If you are planning to move to France with your dog or cat, it is important to arrange the necessary vaccinations and travel documents before departure. The requirements depend on the country you are travelling from.
For pets arriving from the UK, USA or Canada, the standard requirements generally include a microchip, valid rabies vaccination and appropriate veterinary health documentation. Pets arriving from these countries do not normally require a rabies antibody blood test, provided the relevant conditions are met.
The documentation differs by country, so we recommend checking the latest official guidance before making travel arrangements:
- United Kingdom: UK Government pet travel guidance.
- United States: USDA requirements for travelling to France with pets.
- Canada: Canadian Food Inspection Agency pet export guidance.
- Other countries: European Commission pet travel requirements.
Check with your vet well before departure, particularly if your pet is travelling separately, has an incomplete vaccination history or has recently lived in another country.
