Pezenas is the perfect location to be based in for a long stay in the South of France. Pezenas is small enough to feel familiar, but also large enough to provide all the facilities that you will need. The town has a good range of shops, it has excellent transport connections, it is close to the Mediterranean beaches and it is full of life and activities all year around.
Pezenas is located just 20 mins from the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast, just south of the city of Montpellier, about 1 hour north of the Spanish border. The town is well connected with 4 airports nearby (Beziers, Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan), a TGV train station about 15 mins away and the A9 and A75 autoroutes are on your doorstep. You can travel to Montpellier from Pezenas on the regular bus service and the ticket price is just €1.50 (yes €1.50 euros !).
Pezenas is set within the Languedoc vineyards (the largest wine production region in France) and the good vineyards of St Chinian, Faugeres and Picpoul de Pinet are not far away.
Pezenas provides all the charm of Provence, but without the price tag. It also has better weather, better transport connections and I would say, better wine. Pezenas is a beautiful historic town with cobbled streets, stunning 16th and 17th century French mansion houses, a good selection of restaurants and a fabulous weekly market.
Pezenas itself is a joy to spend time in and soak up the atmosphere. Pezenas was once the capital of Languedoc, but after this period the town effectively stood still. The benefits today of this stagnation is a well preserved medieval town with plenty of windy streets and alleyways.
The climate in Pezenas is perfect. It enjoys long hot summers and mild winters. During July and August the daytime temperature regularly reaches 32-34°C (90F) and there is very rarely any rain. My favourite months are september to October and April to May. There are beautiful blue skies and the daytime temperature stays around a comfortable 24-26°C (75F). In the winter months of November through to February, the average nightime temperature can drop as low as 5-7°C (and you will occasionally get a cold snap for a week or so as the temperatures drop to near Zero), but for most of the time during the day you can still walk around in a light jumper or a T shirt and enjoy the sunshine and the clear blue skies. During the winter the average temperature in the day reaches a respectable 13-16°C (55F-60F).
History of Pezenas France
Pezenas was once the capital of Languedoc for a brief period (in the late 16th Century to mid-17th Century). Its association with the Govenors of Languedoc brought great wealth to the town and many large Mansion houses were built in Pezenas around this time.
It was also the period when the celebrated French playwright, Molière, first visited Pezenas (in 1650) performing to the Prince de Conti. He returned a number of times to Pezenas and the town is closely associated with him, holding regular productions of his plays during the summer in the open air theatre.
But after this golden period, Pezenas largely stagnated. In the years up to the French Revolution and during the early to mid-19th Century, the population of the town declined. Its fortunes revived a little with the arrival of the railway to the town and the growth of the Languedoc wine industry in the early 1900's.
Fortunately, Pezenas has been spared the ravages of war or the impact of rapid urban development. As a result the town today is very well-preserved, with plenty of 16th-17th Century stone built town houses and a maze of windy streets and alleyways in its centre.
Pezenas in South France
Pezenas has a range of local amenities that you will need if you are planning a long term rental in France. There are a number of schools, a local hospital, plenty of restaurants, two large supermarkets and more pharmacies than you can shake a stick at.
The local villages around Pezenas are very pretty - often surrounded by vineyards and hills. Some of the more popular viilages surrounding Pezenas include:
- Nezignan l'Eveque - a very pretty village with around 1,800 inhabitants and a good range of services including a popular Pizza restaurant, a hotel with restaurant and a friendly local bar.
- Tourbes - just 2 kms from Pezenas and featuring a very popular restaurant at the old Cave Cooperative, as well as a pharmacy, boulangerie, primary school and local bar.
- Neffies - a small village perched on a hill. Neffies is home to two excellent restaurants and a popular wine bar.
- Alignan du Vent - an old village built around a circular street in the centre (called a Circulade).
- Caux - a good sized village also featuring a circular central street. Caux has a very good restaurant, a small shop, pharmacy and a local vineyard which sells wine direct from the producer.
The main spectacle however, is the fantastic Saturday market in Pezenas which takes over the whole of the town. Here you can buy all manner of local foods, flowers, clothes and nic nacs.
Pezenas is also in the heart of the Languedoc wine region
Pezenas is also a bit of a sports town, with a local football team, rugby club, tennis club, an athletics stadium and numerous cycling clubs. The local football team has been enjoying a lot of recent success (promoted to 5th League in France). There is also a popular Rugby Union club - which features prominently in the annual Mardi Gras festival celebrations, (Le Poulain). There is also a newly refurbished swimming pool, with a heated 50m outdoor pool for the winter, which becomes lovely and cool during the heat of summer.
There is always a festival of some sorts going on in Pezenas - be it a theatre festival, antiques fair, film festival, wine festivalor medieval fete.

In my opinion, I would probably say that Pezenas is one of my top 2 or 3 locations for a long term stay in the South of France. It is small enough to feel familiar, yet large enough to provide all the facilities that you will need. The town is very beautiful and provides a good base for exploring the South of France - in 2 hours in all directions you can be in some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole of France.
